Mityana Charity Cycle Challenge: we smashed it!
As our chosen charity for 2021, ElysianIT took up the challenge that on the 23rd of September we’d raise funds with a virtual Mityana Cycle.
The weather was great, the energy drinks were on hand and the teams warmed up and ready to go. So in two teams, Red & Blue picked out of a hat on the day, we took it in turns on fixed bikes to cycle the equivalent 100 miles (estimate… Uganda uses km and distances are always a bit subjective in their terrain!) which separates a clinic that the Mityana Project Trust (MPT) has built from the MPT base.
The local community is already heavily involved with the upkeep of the clinic and the District Health Office, who was closely involved with the build, is set to take over the running of the clinic in 2023. In the meantime, MPT continues to fund the employment of the Nurse and Night Watchman and hoped toย raise ยฃ1000 to purchase the equipment required to provide better maternity facilities.
This equipment ranging from Antiseptic (ยฃ3) and Fetoscopes (ยฃ6) up to the more expensive items such as a new Delivery bed (ยฃ189) or a Medical trolley (ยฃ89) is literally be the difference between a child and its mother’s life or death.
So, after a lot of huffing and puffy, sweat but luckily no tears we smashed the distance in a record time of 128 minutes and at point of posting this we’ve raised a fantastic ยฃ1,682 which is 168% of our target, and donations are still coming in!ย
On the day a few prizes were awarded, the Blue Team members each receiving winner’s medals for reaching their 50-mile distance target ahead of the Red’s by just over 3 miles. Then there were trophies for the furthest and shortest distances covered. Well done to all, and thank you’s go to all who help in putting the challenge day together… it was a grand day!
But there is still chance for you to help us help MPT, with every extra pound going to fund the building of medical waste solutions, so please click the link below and donate what you can.
